Backstage at Mary Poppins

NBYT’s Executive Director was backstage for each performance of Mary Poppins Jr to raise and lower treetops and kites and to open and close curtains.

“This was my first time working backstage since college shows. I didn’t plan to do it, but this was our first time raising and lowering set pieces in an NBYT production, and I wanted to be the one responsible if something went wrong. It kept me busy, it kept me hot (under those stage lights), and it kept me close to the cast and crew.

“I didn’t tell anyone on staff that I was breaking a backstage rule. I not only brought my phone onstage, but I had it on and I used it. Here is some of the behind-the-scenes magic that I captured. The photos in shadow were taken by cast member Ellie Kelly, with permission to use a phone onstage too.”
