New Britain Youth Theater is seeking an adult or teenage actor to play Mark Twain in a production of The Prince and the Pauper. The play is a theatrical version of the Twain novel which takes place in the attic of Twain’s home in Redding, Connecticut, during the final years of the author’s life there. When a group of neighborhood girls and boys visit Twain, he narrates the story and passes out parts, and the children act out the story of the Tudor Prince Edward and a look-alike peasant. Happening alongside this action, Twain meets with a writer whom he had selected to take dictation as Twain recalls the events of his life for his autobiography. The remainder of the cast are young actors ages 8 through 15.
Rehearsals will be Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Holmes Elementary School at 2150 Stanley Street in New Britain (off Hartford Road (Route71) near West Farms Mall)) and some flexibility with the rehearsal schedule can be accommodated. The production will be performed at the same location on May 5, 6 and 7.
To schedule an audition, call (860) 515-8115 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. A prepared monologue is optional, but all those auditioning will be asked to read from the play. Non-union actors only can be considered (unless a waiver is available), and a small stipend may be available.
