February 8 UPDATE: We’re looking for one more homeschool student to cast in THE CINDERELLA PROJECT! The actor can be male or female, age 10 through 18 (note the lower age), and will play a narrator who becomes involved in the stories they tell. Understudies for lead roles may still be cast too. Contact us with interest!
NBYT will audition homeschooled high school students and college-age actors for school performances of its original play for young audiences, The Cinderella Project, on Friday, February 3, at 10:00 a.m. or by appointment at NBYT’s space at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA Program Center at 362 Main Street in Berlin.
In The Cinderella Project, as Cinderella runs from the ball, she meets the characters from other Cinderella-like folk stories from around the world, and they teach her that the power to change her life is within herself and not just with a prince, a fairy godmother, or fate. NBYT seeks a diverse cast of four females and two males for various roles in each of the stories. The stories included will be from the following:
- Cinderella, the well-known French fairy tale
- Ye Xian, an ancient Chinese folk tale
- Rhodopis, an ancient Egyptian tale
- Mpunzanyana, an African tribal tale
- Sorele, a Jewish tale from Poland
- Arcia, a Mexican-American folk story
- Billy Beg, an Irish folk story (in which the Cinderella character is male)
Teens interested in stage management or production assistance are welcome too.
Those auditioning should prepare a short comic monologue and will also be asked to read from the play. To schedule an audition, call (860) 515-8115 or email email@example.com. All those auditioning must be available for rehearsals and performances on Friday mornings between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Rehearsals will be held in February and March, and performances will be scheduled in area schools in April and May. There is no cost for program, and there are no stipends available to pay actors. Actors should also have their own transportation to performances.
