This fall, NBYT is expanding its performing arts enrichment programming into a full day of offerings on Homeschool Tuesdays, beginning September 13!
Homeschool Repertory Players: Ages 6-12
Tuesdays, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon
100 weeks, $150
A performance and production class for children ages 6 through 12, will continue to be offered in two ten-week terms beginning in September and January—each term focusing on a different theme or style of theater. Discussions about props, costumes, and sets will also include making some items for their own final performances. The class will have visits from musical theater and improv teachers too!
The Fall 2016 themes will be commedia dell’arte, Italian fairy tales, and physical comedy—which will all tie in nicely for a hilarious final production!
Music: Ages 8 – 16
Tuesdays, 12:20 – 1:20 pm
5 weeks, $60
Students will learn about the musical elements of pitch, duration, tempo, dynamics, timbre, and form through a sequential, developmentally appropriate course of study. Students will engage in a variety of musical activities including singing with quality folk literature, playing instruments, and movement to the masters, both classic and contemporary. Students will create, perform and respond to music in a safe environment that encourages them to be tuneful, beautiful, and artful.
Improv: Ages 8 – 16
Tuesdays, 1:30 – 2:30 pm
5 weeks, $60
Students will get a basic understanding of improvisational theater concepts such as story building, environmental awareness, saying “yes,” and making and accepting dramatic offers. The group is introduced to short-form improv games designed to build teamwork and reinforce basic concepts. No prior experience in theater or improv is necessary, and participants will be able to take what they learn and use it to not only become better actors, but also better listeners and speakers. Experienced performers will be challenged to expand their skills and stretch their choices. A short performance will be held at the end of the final class.
All classes meet at the New Britain YMCA at 50 High Street. NBYT is located just steps from the New Britain Public Library and New Britain Youth Museum, and a short drive from Walnut Hill Park and the New Britain Museum of American Art.
