New classes begin in February, but registration has already begun! New this term is an expanded Saturday class schedule, a select chorus, and a new homeschool enrichment program in stage design and production.
Stage Performance, Musical Theater, and Improv
New classes begin on Saturday, February 6, and run for 12 weeks. All classes meet at NBYT at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA. The cost is $125 per class for each 12-week term. Performance Groups (the Improv Troupe and Select Chorus) will have additional rehearsals and performances.
Students within one year of the age requirements may be allowed to register with approval of the instructor and Executive Director.
Stage Performance, Section I: Ages 6 – 10 (9:30-10:30 am)
Stage Performance, Section II: Ages 8 – 12 (10:45-11:45 am)
Drama games and scenes are used to teach character development, storytelling, voice, movement, improvisation, and how to perform in front of an audience. First time actors should enroll in Section I. Older and experienced students in Section II work on scenes with a greater focus on character development. The term ends with a Share Day performance for family and friends.
Musical Stage Performance, Section I: Ages 8-12 (9:30-10:30 am)
Musical Stage Performance, Section II: Ages 12-18 (10:45-11:45 am)
Focusing on a different theme or composer each term, students work with a musical director on vocal warm-ups, diction, projection, acting a song, and performing in front of an audience. Both new and experienced singers are welcome to participate. Each term, songs will be chosen especially for the children enrolled and will also allow for short solos for all participants. Returning students will be challenged to expand their skills and vocal choices. A short performance will be held at the end of the final class.
Improv in Performance: Ages 10-14 (12:00-1:00 pm)
Participants get a basic understanding of improvisational theater concepts such as story building, environmental awareness, saying “yes,” and making and accepting dramatic offers. The group will be introduced to short-form improv games designed to build teamwork and reinforce basic concepts. No prior experience in theater or improv is necessary, and participants will be able to take what they learn and use it to not only become better actors, but also better listeners and speakers. A short performance will be held at the end of the final class.
NBYT Select Chorus: Ages 12-18 (12:00 – 1:00 PM)
A NEW musical performance group for experienced singers that will rehearse for at least one performance each term and may appear at community events. Open to new members by audition.
SquishyTown Asylum: Ages 12-18 (1:00 – 2:00 PM)
NBYT’s improv troupe performs at least once each term and appears at other community events. Open to new members by audition to actors with previous improv experience.
Beginning on Tuesday, February 2, NBYT’s Performance Program for homeschooled children ages 6 through 12 will create an original performance based on 1950s sci-fi movies! Discussions about props, costumes, and sets will also include making some items for their own Share Day performance.
A new Stage Design and Production program for ages 10 through 16 will offer children and teens the opportunity to learn about and help to design and create sets, lights, props, and costume pieces for the homeschool performance and other NBYT productions. Students in this program will meet five weeks during the Performance Program hours. At the homeschool Share Day performance, they will help to run the show from backstage.
