A new class schedule, a new musical theater class, and new homeschool enrichment and outreach programs are just announced for Fall 2015! Musical Theater Audition Workshops will be announced soon too, and private acting coaching, lessons, and audition preparation are now available with NBYT Teaching Artists on a weekly or one-time basis!
Registration for the programs listed below begins immediately!
Stage Play, Stage Performance, Musical Theater and Improv
Fall 2015 classes begin on Saturday, September 12, and run for 12 weeks. All classes meet at NBYT at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA. The cost is $125 per class for each 12-week term.
Students within one year of the age requirements may be allowed to register with approval of the instructor and Executive Director.
Stage Play: Ages 5 – 8 (Saturdays, 9:30-10:30 am)
Stage Performance, Section I: Ages 8 – 12 (Saturdays, 10:45-11:45 am)
Fall ’15 Focus: Basic Character Choices
Stage Performance, Section II: Ages 12 – 18 (Saturdays, 9:30-10:30 am)
Spring ’15 Focus: Accents and Physical Choices
NBYT’s Stage Play and Stage Performance classes combine the instruction of drama classes with the excitement of being in a show! They’re ideal for younger actors, children who want their first experience onstage—or a little more experience—or even older students who want to practice their skills or who aren’t able to audition and rehearse for NBYT’s productions. Small-scale performances, with simple costumes and props, are held at the end of the final class and are open to family and friends at no cost.
In each section, children explore acting techniques, voice, movement, and improvisation in order to develop focus and learn to work as an ensemble. In Fall 2015, Stage Performance classes will focus on character choices. Section I will be introduced to basic character choices. Section II will use scenes from musical theater scripts to explore vocal accents and physical character choices.
Musical Stage Performance, Section I: Ages 8-12 (Saturdays, 12:00-1:00 pm)
Musical Stage Performance, Secction II: Ages 12-18 (Saturdays, 10:45-11:45 am)
Fall ’15 Focus: Stephen Schwartz
Students work with a musical director on vocal warm-ups, diction, projection, acting a song, and performing in front of an audience. Both new and experienced singers are welcome to participate. Each term, songs will be chosen especially for the children enrolled and will also allow for short solos for all participants. Returning students will be challenged to expand their skills and vocal choices. A short performance will be held at the end of the final class and will be open to family and friends at no cost.
Improv in Performance: Ages 12-18 (Saturdays, 12:00-1:00 pm)
Participants get a basic understanding of improvisational theater concepts such as story building, environmental awareness, saying “yes,” and making and accepting dramatic offers. The group will be introduced to short-form improv games designed to build teamwork and reinforce basic concepts. No prior experience in theater or improv is necessary, and participants will be able to take what they learn and use it to not only become better actors, but also better listeners and public speakers. Returning students will be challenged to expand their skills and stretch their choices. A short performance will be held at the end of the final class and will be open to family and friends at no cost.
NBYT’s Homeschool Enrichment Program for ages 5 through 14 is offered in two ten-week terms beginning in September and January. Children are grouped by age for some scene work and activities, but groups are flexible and dependent upon enrollment. In the fall, the class rehearses and performs a scripted play; in the spring, the instructors and class develop a show of their own.
Fall 2015 Production: The Faire Tale Zone
An original script by Rae Johnson that visits the mysterious world of some favorite fairy tales!
Drama games, scenes, and music are also used to explore acting techniques, voice, movement, and improvisation in order to develop focus and learn to work as an ensemble. Discussions about props, costumes, and sets will also include making some items for their own “Share Day” performance. Older children can also choose a special project in performance, directing, writing, or design.
The Share Day performance, with simple costumes and props, will be held during the final class and will be repeated in the evening of the final class.

NBYT’s new Homeschool Outreach Program, for ages 13 through 19, will rehearse a production to tour to elementary schools and libraries. The production will be Rewind Your Mind!, an original script that will be both fun and educational for actors and audiences. A diverse cast of actors, with or without prior experience, is encouraged to participate.
The program offers teens opportunities to not only learn about theater and producing a performance, but also a way to serve their community. Rehearsals will be held at NBYT at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA (50 High Street in downtown New Britain) on Thursdays from 9:30 to 12:30 a.m. beginning September 17. After approximately six weeks of rehearsal, the group will begin performances which may continue through January. Performances will be scheduled primarily on Thursday mornings, but some weekends or other days may be scheduled according to participants availability. Some conflicts during the rehearsal and performance period will be manageable. Transportation must be provided by each family, not NBYT, and families be asked to help transport some simple prop, costume and set pieces as well. Actors will also help to set up props and sets at performance locations. The program participation fee is $75.
