Continuing its most ambitious season yet, NBYT has auditions, workshops, and classes scheduled for the weeks ahead!
Little Kids on Stage! and Teen Company Auditions
NBYT will audition children ages 6 through 9 for The Tale of Snow White on Monday, January 27, and Tuesday, January 28, at Trinity-on-Main Performance Center. Audition times both days begin at 6:00 p.m. No prepared monologue is required, but those auditioning will be asked to repeat lines or read from the play. For children cast, rehearsals will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays. As written by NBYT Artistic Director David B. Sousa, The Tale of Snow White follows the classic fairy tale with some fun additions, and roles include Snow White (who’s “brave and sweet and also smart”), the wicked queen, “forest creatures fierce and wild,” a prince and a huntsman, the magic mirror and servants of the queen, and of course dwarves (numbering “six or seven, but maybe nine or else eleven”). The production will be performed in Stockman Hall at Trinity-on-Main in April.
The NBYT Teen Company will hold auditions for ages 12 to 18 for Great Expectations, by Barbara Field based on the novel by Charles Dickens, on Tuesday, January 21, and Wednesday, January 22, at Trinity-on-Main Performance Center. Audition times both days begin at 6:00 p.m. Those auditioning should prepare a one-minute dramatic monologue. Actors will also be given dialogue from the script to read at auditions. Two younger actors, ages 10 or 11, will also be cast and may audition at the same times (with no prepared monologue required). Great Expectations is based closely on Dickens’ classic novel of young orphan Pip. The production will be performed at Trinity-on-Main in April.
All auditions are open to children or teens from any town, and a diverse cast with all levels of experience is welcome. To register for auditions, call (860) 515-8115 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Those cast will be asked to pay a participation fee of $60. No one, however, will be turned away for inability to pay, so please ask about financial assistance if necessary. Teens may also call with interest in production and backstage positions.
Two three-week workshops are scheduled in January for middle school and high school students (or fifth graders with permission) who’d like to prepare for an upcoming audition or improve their audition skills.
In the Audition Skills Workshop, participants will gain confidence by learning how to handle nerves, prepare themselves, and make a great impression at auditions. The workshop will cover creating resumes, preparing monologues or songs, doing cold readings, and many tips and tricks to make a difference and stand out at future auditions. The workshop will be held on January 11, 18, and 25 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with instructor Becky Beth Benedict.
In the Musical Theater Movement and Dance Workshop, participants will work with a director/choreographer on physical warm-ups, a sampling of Broadway dance styles and steps, injury prevention, and how to prepare for and get noticed at a dance audition. The workshop is perfect for the “non-dancer” to the “triple-threat” wannabe! Comfortable attire that allows the body to move freely but be seen is recommended. Dance shoes are optional, but encouraged. This workshop will be held on January 11, 18, and 25 from 11:00 a.m. to noon with instructor Alison Bogatay.
The cost of each workshop is $40 for all three weeks, and students may register for both workshops for a discounted cost of $70. For a Registration Form to complete and mail, please click here. For more information, please call 860-515-8115.
Acting, Improv, and Musical Theater Classes
New classes begin at NBYT on Saturday, February 8. All classes meet at Trinity-on-Main Performance Center, and cost only $100 for ten weeks. All classes end with a short performance in the final class which is open to family and friends at no cost.
An introductory acting class, Stage Play, is open to children ages 5 through 8. Stage Performance is offered in two sections: one for ages 8 and up, and a second section for ages 12 and up. This term, Stage Performance I will focus on creating characters, and students in Stage Performance II will work with contemporary scenes. In each acting class, children explore acting techniques, voice, and movement in order to develop focus and learn to work together as an ensemble. Stage Play and both sections of Stage Performance meet on Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
In Musical Stage Performance, a choral class for ages 10 and up, NBYT musical director Angela Klimaytis works with students on vocal warm-ups, diction, projection, acting a song, and performing in front of an audience. Both new and experienced singers are encouraged to participate. Each term, songs for group performance will be chosen especially for the children enrolled and will also allow for featured solos for all participants. Musical Stage Performance meets on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to noon.
Improv in Performance is designed to give students age 10 and up a basic understanding of improvisational theater concepts such as story building, environmental awareness, saying “yes,” and making and accepting dramatic offers. The group works with many short-form improv games designed to build teamwork and reinforce basic concepts. No prior experience in theater or improv is necessary, but experienced improv performers are also encouraged to participate. Through improv, participants will be able to take what they learn and use it to not only become better actors, but also better listeners and public speakers. Improv in Performance meets on Saturdays from noon to 1:00 p.m.
