UPDATE: We’re still seeking three young actors for the roles of Young Pip, Young Herbert, and Young Estella, and we’ll consider children as young as eight. Please email email@example.com with interest or for more details.
The NBYT Teen Company will hold auditions for Great Expectations, by Barbara Field based on the novel by Charles Dickens, on Tuesday, January 21, and Wednesday, January 22, at 6:00 p.m. at Trinity-on-Main Performance Center at 19 Chestnut Street in New Britain. Callbacks, if necessary, will be held on Thursday, January 23. The production will be performed at Trinity-on-Main on April 25, 26, and 27. Todd Santa Maria will direct.
Auditions are open to 12 to 18 year-olds from any town, and all levels of experience are welcome. Those auditioning should prepare a one-minute dramatic monologue. Actors will also be given dialogue from the script to read at auditions. Two younger actors, ages 10 or 11, will also be cast and may audition at the same times (but don’t have to prepare monologues). To register for auditions, call (860) 515-8115 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Those cast will be asked to pay a participation fee of $60. No one, however, will be turned away for inability to pay, so please ask about financial assistance if necessary. Teens may also call with interest in production and backstage positions.
Great Expectations is based closely on Dickens’ classic novel of young orphan Pip who lives with his strict sister, “Mrs. Joe,” and her kind husband. Mrs. Joe volunteers Pip to make visits to the home of the wealthy Miss Havisham, who was jilted on her wedding day years before. Pip is brought there to play with Miss Havisham’s ward, Estella, who enjoys tormenting Pip for being common. Because of that, Pip strives to one day be a gentleman. The story follows Pip to London where he becomes the heir of an unknown benefactor. In the end, Pip learns that despite great expectations, nothing was as he thought it would be.
The NBYT Teen Company is a program of New Britain Youth Theater in which teens become involved in choosing, producing and promoting their own theater. The program offers leadership opportunities and a chance for teens to suggest the shows they want to do, all while under the guidance of NBYT directors.
