UPDATE: Because of the snow storm, auditions have been postponed to Sunday and Monday, February 17 and 18.
The NBYT Teen Company will hold auditions for Comic Shorts, a collection of short comiedies, on Sunday, February 10, and Monday, February 11, at 6:00 p.m. at Trinity-on-Main Performance Center at 19 Chestnut Street in New Britain. The production will be performed at Trinity-on-Main on April 12 and 13. The pieces were selected by Executive Artistic Director David Sousa, and each will be directed by a different New Britain Youth Theater teaching artist.
Sousa selected the comedies from pieces first performed at the Actors Theatre of Louisville and from All in the Timing, a collection of one-act comedies by David Ives. Actors auditioning may indicate their preference to perform in one or more of the pieces. Actors may also choose to assist on productions in which they aren’t performing, and will be encouraged to participate in a series of workshops in production, directing and design at no additional cost.
Participation is open to 13 to 18 year-olds from any town. Those auditioning should prepare a monologue of ten to twenty lines from any modern comedy. Actors may also be given dialogue to read at auditions. To register for auditions, call (860) 515-8115 or email email@example.com. Those cast will be asked to pay a participation fee of $50, but will receive two complimentary tickets for the production. No one, however, will be turned away for inability to pay, so please ask about financial assistance if necessary. Teens may also call with interest in production and backstage positions.
In addition to auditions, the NBYT Teen Company is also beginning an improvisational theater class for ages 12 and up. Introduction to Improv is designed to give participants a basic understanding of improvisational theater concepts such as story building, environmental awareness, saying “yes,” and making and accepting offers. The group will be introduced to many short-form improv games designed to build teamwork and reinforce the basic concepts. No prior experience in theater or improv is necessary, and participants will be able to take what they learn and use it to not only become better actors, but also better listeners and public speakers. The ten-week class will meet on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to noon beginning on February 16. The cost for the ten weeks is $100. To register, call (860) 515-8115 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The NBYT Teen Company is a program of New Britain Youth Theater in which teens can become involved in choosing, producing and promoting their own theater. The program offers leadership opportunities and a chance for teens to do the shows they want to do, all while under the guidance of NBYT directors.
