In addition to auditions, NBYT is beginning a new term of classes and homeschool programs in September. Stage Performance is held on Saturday mornings, and Homeschool Enrichment is held on Tuesday mornings. Registration for both programs has begun for children from any town.
In both Stage Performance and Homeschool Enrichment, drama games and scenes are used to explore acting techniques, voice, movement, and improvisation in order to develop focus and learn to work together as an ensemble. Each term, children rehearse scenes chosen especially for those enrolled and with the input of the children themselves. Small group sizes give each child quality instruction and guarantee that everyone has a featured part in a final performance.
Stage Performance, for ages 5 through 14, is ideal for younger actors, children who want their first experience onstage—or a little more experience—or even older children who aren’t able to audition and rehearse for full productions. With two teaching artists available, older and more experienced students are grouped to work on scenes of their own with a greater focus on character development. The small-scale performance, with simple costumes and props, is held in the last half hour of the final class and is open to family and friends. The program meets on Saturday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for ten weeks beginning on September 15.
In Homeschool Enrichment, also for ages 5 through 14, children are grouped by age for appropriate instruction and activities, but groups are flexible. Discussions about props, costumes and set pieces include making items for their final performance. The oldest children can also choose a special project in performance, directing, writing or design. The new term meets on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for ten weeks beginning on September 11.
